Dialogue Calls for Improved Social Protection to Uplift Vulnerable Citizens

The Social Protection Dialogue concluded on Tuesday at Hotel Africana in Kampala with stakeholders urging the development of a comprehensive national strategy on social protection to address economic inequality in Uganda.

Under the theme \”Investment in Social Protection across the Lifecycle,\” participants observed that social and economic inequalities are the root causes of poverty, crime and other societal ills in Uganda. Professor Ezra Suruma of Makerere University proposed emulating models like Norway and Alaska in the US, where a portion of oil revenues are allocated specifically to assist vulnerable and elderly citizens.

\”No Ugandan should live in abject poverty as the right to decent living conditions is a fundamental human right,\” Suruma said.

Guest of Honor Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister, committed to supporting efforts to guarantee social protection and praised the Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection.

Minister of State for Elderly Affairs Dominique Gidudu highlighted various existing social protection programs but noted that raising public awareness is key for effective policy implementation.

\”Social protection plays a critical role in addressing poverty, inequality and vulnerability in Uganda,\” Gidudu said.

Parliamentary Forum Chair Flavia Kabahenda called for inclusive participation of all stakeholders and oversight of the strategic priorities on social protection.

\”We need a national social protection strategy as we embark on this journey to address inequality,\” Kabahenda said.

The dialogue concluded with consensus on developing a comprehensive, nationally coordinated strategy on social protection to tackle Uganda\’s social and economic disparities.
