Ugandan boxers targeting Paris Olympic Games qualifier in Italy

The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) will send four boxers to the Paris Olympic Games qualifier slated for February 29th to March 12th in Busto Arsizio, Italy.

Moses Muhangi, President of the Boxing Federation told Xinhua on Monday that although Uganda failed to qualify a single boxer for the Olympics at the Africa Olympic qualifier in Senegal last year, this time they are determined to try and improve.

“Don’t write us off yet. We know it is going to be very competitive against all world boxers who are still looking for another chance to qualify for the Summer Olympics,” added Muhangi.

The 2024 Summer Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.

Light welterweight Joshua Tukamuhebwa who will captain the team told Xinhua that after coming close to qualification in Senegal last year where he lost at the semifinal stage, he is determined to try and perform better to book a slot at the Olympics.

“It is the wish of any boxer to qualify and participate in the Olympic Games,” said Tukamuhebwa.

Under the guidance of coach Twaibu Mayanja, the other boxers on the team include Shafic Mawanda, Yusuf Nkobeza and Emily Nakalema.
