Former Diamond Trust Bank employee to lose property over theft of sh787m

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has secured a court order to sell off the properties of a former employee of Diamond Trust Bank (DTB). The move is aimed at recovering shillings 787 million that he stole.

Daniel Kirumira Kalinda was convicted by the Nakasero-based Anti-Corruption Court last year and sentenced to five years in jail. Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga, who presided over the case, ordered Kalinda to pay the money to DTB.

On March 5, 2014, Deputy Registrar of the Anti-Corruption Court Beatrice Atingu concurred with the prosecution’s arguments and granted the execution order to facilitate the recovery of the money.

“The application by the Director of Public Prosecutions to execute the orders is hereby granted in the amount attached to the application,” Atingu said.

Chief State Attorney Annette Namatovu Ddungu informed the court that the state was fully prepared to execute the orders aimed at recovering the money.

“I pray that the number of shillings 787 million and costs of taking this execution be realised. Attachment, valuation, and sale of immovable property, land at Kyabakadde, Kyabakadde parish, Kyammpisi Mukono district measuring 0.12 acres developed with modern residential house,” Ddungu said.

Also listed for sale by the ODPP is another piece of land located at Kyabakadde village, Kyabakadde parish, Kyampisi Mukono district, measuring approximately 0.6 acres. According to court documents, the land is developed with three tenement blocks owned by Kirumira, among other properties.

The prosecution said Kalinda, the then bank’s compliance officer at DTB, irregularly transferred the money from the general suspense account to Christine Namazzi subsequently causing a loss to the bank.

According to the evidence adduced in court during the Kalinda regularised overdrawn accounts, made false entries in the bank’s system, and credited shillings 787 million from the bank’s general suspense account to a Namazzi’s account.
