Bernard Kafua Ndubi (30) has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the 2018 murder of his ex-girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter in revenge after their breakup.
Ndubi had been in a turbulent relationship with Carolyne Chemutai (30) for some time. Chemutai ended the relationship, though agreed to meet with Ndubi one last time to discuss things.
On the night of November 8th, 2018, Ndubi went to Chemutai’s home for their scheduled meeting. However, he arrived to find Chemutai heading to a nearby lodge with another man. Enraged at being rejected, Ndubi started throwing stones at the pair.
Instead of confronting Chemutai at the lodge, Ndubi took out his anger on her daughter, three-year-old Betty Abigail. He strangled the little girl and dumped her body in a nearby pit latrine.
Chemutai reported Abigail missing the next day. On November 16th, Abigail’s decomposing body was discovered in the pit latrine, with a post-mortem revealing she died of strangulation.
Ndubi handed himself in to the police after learning Chemutai was looking for him over her daughter’s disappearance. He was charged with Abigail’s murder.
In court, prosecutors argued Ndubi had no lawful defense for killing the child in an act of revenge against the mother. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison by High Court Judge David Batema.
Considering Ndubi’s 5 years already served on remand, his final sentence was set at 9 years.
Chemutai says no parent should have to bury their child, and she continues to mourn the loss of her daughter.
“Having to bury your child is the strangest thing no parent deserves to experience. Every day, I visit my baby’s grave to reassure her how much I miss her though I may never have the opportunity to hold her in my arms, I keep informing her all will be well,” the mother, Chemutai says.
