Security guard shot while stealing foodstuffs from Kabale Central market

A security guard, Andrew Muhwezi, 47, has been arrested by Kabale district police on suspicion of a severe market foodstuffs robbery. Muhwezi, who works for Securiko Uganda Limited and lives in Nyakahita cell, Kyanamira sub-county in Kabale district, allegedly committed the crime on April 18, 2024.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman, Muhwezi, armed with a rifle loaded with five rounds of ammunition, entered Kabale Central main market around 2am. He then stole goods worth four hundred forty thousand shillings from three different individuals.

Constable Muhumuza George, who was on duty at the market, noticed Muhwezi carrying a bag and ordered him to stop. However, Muhwezi attempted to escape, prompting the police officer to shoot as Muhwezi pointed his gun at him. Muhwezi was subsequently captured and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Once recovered, Muhwezi will face the charges against him. The incident was registered at Kabale Police station, and a team led by Deputy Superintendent Mukama Hakim, the District CID officer, visited the scene, collected relevant statements, and recovered some of the stolen goods, including sweet bananas, carrots, beans, and apples.

The recovered items were photographed and returned to their owners. The suspect’s firearm was seized as evidence and is currently under investigation.
