Man Remanded to Luzira Prison for Stealing Table Forks Worth UGX100,000

A 35-year-old loader, Yusuf Byaruhanga, is facing a rather unfortunate start to the New Year as he finds himself on remand at Luzira prison. The accusation against him is the alleged theft of a carton of forks, valued at 100,000 shillings.

In a visibly emotional court appearance before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, Byaruhanga vehemently denied the theft charge brought against him.

The court, however, decided to remand him until January 9th, 2024, marking the date for the commencement of the trial.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution, led by Allan Mucunguzi, presented its case, asserting that on August 26th, 2023, at William Street, Byaruhanga committed the theft, taking the carton of forks belonging to Geoffrey Ssendagire.

Simultaneously, another individual, 27-year-old Rogers Ssemanda, a street vendor at Kasiwukira Plaza, faced a similar fate in the same courtroom.

Ssemanda stands accused of embezzling over 6.4 million shillings, funds that were collected for a cash round.

His alleged crime involved breaking into a savings box to steal the contributions of 23 members who had been diligently saving since March 2023.

These members, working in and around Kasiwukira Plaza in Kampala Central, were left in shock and betrayed by Ssemanda’s alleged actions.

Ssemanda, when arraigned before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayiizi, pleaded not guilty to the theft charges.

However, the magistrate decided to remand him in custody until January 9th, 2024, when his case will be further addressed.
