Secondary school in Hoima closed for operating illegally

Oil Side Secondary School in Hoima District has been closed for operating illegally.

The closure of the school located in Katooke village, Kabaale sub County left more than 130 learners stranded.

The school was closed on Thursday during an impromptu visit by Caroline Nyamahunge, the Hoima District Inspector of Schools.

During the visit, it was discovered that the school was operating without a license and occupying some of the classrooms belonging to Kyapaloni Primary School, a government-aided school. The government constructed 21 classrooms at Kyapaloni Primary School after it was relocated to Katooke village following the acquisition of its land for the constriction of the oil pipeline. The school currently accommodates 350 pupils from P.1 up to P.7

Nyamahunge wondered how the secondary school director initiated the process of accommodating and teaching his students in the government-owned primary school classrooms without the consent of district education officials.

Nyamahunge says the school was also found operating a boarding section where students had their beddings on the floors in an insecure and unsafe environment.

Hassan Tumwijukye, the Director said that the school was established in the area to curb high school dropouts.

Nyamahunge said that the government is in the final stages of establishing a Seed School in Kabaale sub-county.

Benon Amanya, a resident appealed to the government to consider establishing a secondary school in the area to bridge the education gap.
