The Police in Kanungu district are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic suicide of a 39-year-old woman.
The deceased has been identified as Alistidia Ampereza, a teacher by profession, resident of Bushura Village, Eastern Ward, Kanungu Town Council.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on 29th February 2024, around 6 PM. Ampereza returned home to find her stepdaughter, Doreen Naturinda, peeling matooke in the kitchen and instructed her to leave the kitchen so that she (Ampereza) would prepare their meals herself.
Approximately an hour later, Ampereza contacted her brother-in-law, Blessing Tugumisirize, complaining of severe stomach pain after vomiting and requesting charcoal powder, instructing him not to inform anyone about her illness.
However, Tugumisirize decided to inform his uncle, the husband of the deceased, who was not present at the time of the incident and was then rushed to Makiro Health Centre III, where she passed away at around 1:30 AM. Her body was subsequently taken to Kanungu Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Maate condemned the act and called on the general public to always seek guidance from relevant authorities whenever they face challenges rather than taking their own lives.
