On Monday evening, a tragic accident occurred near the Kisoro Airfield at the Air land Hotel, located in Kabuga Village, Gasiza Parish, Nyakabande Sub County, Kisoro district, along the Kabale-Kisoro road, resulting in the death of three individuals.
Elisa Niyonzima, 56, from Gisasa Village, Muhindura Parish, Kanaba Sub County, and Junior Byaruhanga, 22, from Kagano Village, Muhindura Parish, Kanaba Sub County, were instantly killed when a Scania fuel tanker with the registration number KCH 014K/ ZF 5477 collided with their motorcycle, registered under UDW 017N.
The same fuel tanker, having lost control, also crashed into a silver Subaru Forester with the registration number UBM 445A. The car was being driven by Mathias Dusabimana, 50, a medical worker at Buhinga Hospital in Fort Portal District, and his passenger, Byukusenge Federensi, 22, a student at Kabale University.
Unfortunately, Byukusenge succumbed to severe head injuries, which led to internal brain bleeding, at St. Francis Hospital Mutolere later that night.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police Spokesperson, the accident is believed to have been caused by brake failure on the fuel tanker. The driver of the tanker, identified as Abdikadil, 35, of Kenyan origin, managed to evade police arrest and is currently on the run.
Following postmortem examinations at Kisoro Hospital, the bodies of the deceased were returned to their families for burial.
