University Bursar, Husband Arrested Over Alleged Torture Of Student To Death

Police have arrested Gloria Mwesigye, the bursar of Metropolitan University in Biharwe, Mbarara district, and her spouse following the discovery of a deceased student who had visited their residence.

The victim, identified as Kelleti Mbabazi, was studying a Bachelor of Arts in Education at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara. The sequence of events began on February 29, 2024, when Mbabazi and his friend, Jaberi Amwine, left the Bishop Stuart University campus in Kakoba to visit Mwesigye in Biharwe. Mbabazi was not seen alive again, untill his lifeless body was found in a morgue on March 3, 2024.

According to Amwine, they had spent most of the day visiting Mwesigye. Around 8:00 pm, Mwesigye suggested that they stay overnight in Biharwe, but Mbabazi chose to return to Bishop Stuart University, as stated in Amwine’s police report. From that point on, Mbabazi became unreachable, and his body was later discovered.

However, inconsistencies were found in Amwine’s statement during police investigation. It was revealed that Amwine and Mbabazi had met Mwesigye and her husband, also a lecturer at Metropolitan University, at the couple’s bar in Biharwe, located near their home. After some drinks, the group returned to the couple’s house, where Amwine left Mbabazi and returned to the university.

On the morning of March 1, Biharwe police found an unidentified body with bruises and deep cuts. After several days of searching, Mbabazi’s landlord was informed about a body in the morgue, which was later identified as Mbabazi by his university classmates.

Following weeks of investigation, police arrested Mwesigye, her unidentified husband, and three other suspects believed to be involved in Mbabazi’s murder. Preliminary findings suggest that Mbabazi was killed in the bursar’s house following an unknown dispute, and his body was disposed of near the university with the help of accomplices.

Detectives noted that the torture marks on Mbabazi’s body suggested a crime of passion. They are investigating whether the torturers were trying to extract information from Mbabazi or punishing him for a suspected relationship with Mwesigye.

Mbarara police officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the murder. Sources revealed that Mwesigye confessed to detectives that Mbabazi was tortured to death at her home. However, Mwesigye’s husband and his friend, who are believed to have participated in the torture, have remained silent for unknown reasons.
