BREAKING: Security guard arrested over attempted robbery at Equity Bank in Soroti

A security guard was arrested Tuesday morning for interrogation after an unsuccessful robbery attempt at a bank in Soroti city.

A joint security team from the Police and the army (UPDF) arrived at the Equity Bank branch and conducted a search for the suspected robbers, who were reported to have locked themselves inside the facility.

The security operation was led by Maj. Moses Emeju.

After two hours of a sweep inside the bank that is located within Soroti town, the security teams emerged from the bank building, New Vision’s Godfrey Ojore at the scene reported.

Emeju declined to comment and referred reporters to the Police spokesman.

Francis Erumu, the bank manager, said that the suspected robbers did not steal money.

“The thieves tried to access the bank last night but our guards were on alert. We have not lost anything,” he said.

No statement has been issued by the Police.

At the scene, the security team arrested the security guard deployed at the bank for interrogation.

Meanwhile, for hours, business came to a standstill as Police cordoned off the main road, with onlookers watching from a distance.

A Police dog was later brought to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The security teams, who are at the scene, said they had not found anybody inside but details will be given later.

Damali Nachuha, the East Kyoga regional Police commander and also the spokesperson, arrived at the scene. She has not yet briefed the press.

In the picture below, Nachuha is seen arriving at the scene, flanked by the deputy resident city commissioner for Soroti East, Edwin Benesa (right), and bank manager Erumu.
