Prof. Gilbert Bukenya rejoins President’s office

President Museveni has appointed Prof. Gilbert Bukenya as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Environment and Sanitation.

This was disclosed by the State House in a statement to the media on Wednesday night.

“The Presidential Press Unit (PPU) wishes to inform the general public that H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. (Rtd.) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed H.E. Prof. Gilbert Bukenya as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Environment and Sanitation,” the statement reads.

The Ugandan politician was the seventh vice president of Uganda from May 23, 2003, until May 23, 2011.

He also represented the constituency of Busiro County North in the Ugandan Parliament.

It remains unclear why Museveni appointed the 74-year-old physician as his advisor.

The development comes against the backdrop of speculation of an impending cabinet reshuffle.

Bukenya has, in recent years, been appearing at state functions.

Museveni has been appointing former Cabinet Ministers and Vice Presidents government officials as his Senior Presidential advisors, as the position attracts the benefits of a cabinet minister.

Other elderly advisors include former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, former Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, and former Ministers Amelia Kyambadde, Sarah Kanyike, and Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi.

By 2023, Museveni had 139 advisors.
