An investigation is underway in Mbarara City regarding the drowning of a 17-year-old boy while swimming in River Rwizi.

The boy, Jordan Balimwikungu, was a day student at Mbarara Secondary School and lived in Kiswahili cell, Kakoba ward in Mbarara City. SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi regional police spokesperson, reported the incident.

The Rwizi regional police fire and rescue services recorded the drowning, which took place on April 08, 2024.

The report indicates that the boy had gone swimming at Katete Beach in the same area. Upon receiving the report, the police initiated a search and rescue mission. However, as of Wednesday morning, the body had not been found.

The police fire and rescue department searched to retrieve the body on Tuesday, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The search for the body continues, and an investigation into the cause of the drowning has been launched.

The head teacher of Mbarara Secondary School, Mr Godfrey Birungi, confirmed the news of the drowning. He stated that Jordan was a day student at the school.

On Monday, he arrived at school and immediately went to Katete Beach to swim with his friends. The school has since learned of his drowning and the fact that his body is missing. The school plans to meet with the family to discuss how they can assist in preparing for the burial and how to prevent such incidents in the future.
