Kyambogo University has followed other higher institutions of learning in announcing adjustments to its academic calendar
This follows a Ministry of Education directive earlier this month for all schools and higher institutions to break off for the upcoming national census exercise scheduled for May 9th and 10th, 2024.
The University Vice Chancellor Elly Katunguka in a statement last weekend, communicated to the lecturers and student community that the semester will be breaking off temporarily to allow census exercise.
As per the revised calendar, the university will be closed on May 9th and 10th to allow students who wish to travel home for the census to do so.
Students who choose to remain on campus, the VC aid, will be counted at their place of residence on the night of May 9th.
Notably, the semester will progress as initially planned, with end-of-semester examinations commencing on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024.
In a November 8th, 2023 letter, the Ministry of Education instructed all universities and schools to close for the national population headcount.
This directive aimed to ensure students could participate in the census, which will generate data crucial for government policy planning and implementation.

The announcement caused concern as it coincided with the end-of-semester examination period for many universities.
Makerere University, for instance, adjusted its semester to accommodate the census break, with examinations starting on May 21st and ending on June 11th, 2024.
Kyambogo University at the time was undecided and had to hold a senate meeting to consider adjustments which were finally confirmed last weekend.
This adjustment is hoped to ensure student participation in the census while minimizing disruption to the academic calendar.
