A 19-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of killing her mother-in-law and partially burning her body during a domestic dispute in a village in Kenya.
Veronica Ndinda Maneene, 55, was found outside her house in Ikutha after the incident on Saturday night, February 24, police said.
She had been bludgeoned and partially burnt using a mattress, police who visited the scene said.
A team investigating the murder said preliminary results indicated the woman hit her mother-in-law on the head after a domestic altercation.
The reasons behind the dispute have not been disclosed. The deceased woman and the suspect were the only ones inside the house, police said.
After the murder, she dragged the body outside the house and burned it using pieces of old mattresses before piling stones on top.
Police arrived at the scene and found the deceased’s body covered with those stones.
The body was transferred to the morgue at Mutomo Level Four Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The suspect, Faith Mwikali Mwania, 19, was arrested and is awaiting court appearance, police said.
Security officers said they are investigating the motive behind the murder.
Police plan to file further applications in court to detain her for psychiatric evaluation before prosecution.
Cases of murder are on the rise despite efforts to address the situation. Some cases remain unresolved, police said.
Elsewhere, police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a slum area of Lungalunga in Nairobi.
The body of Jackson Wambua, 39, was discovered early Sunday morning long after he had died.
The cause of death is yet to be determined, police said.
