UPDF deserter who joined ADF rebels arrested

In a joint operation, the anti-terrorism task force and the district security committee in Buyende have apprehended a deserter from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), who subsequently joined the ranks of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Joint security spokesperson, Fred Enanga, revealed that Hassan Mustafa Ndarike, also known as Wakwima Dilian, left the UPDF in 2016 and later aligned himself with the rebels in the DRC.

“Under the command of Ali Isma, an ADF commander, Ndarike managed to slip into the country around February this year. He had plans to target attendees of a music show in Buyende district,” shared Enanga.

Enanga further explained that following the threats, Ndarike was located and apprehended in Serere. He was subsequently handed over to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) for further handling.

Enanga cautioned that Ndarike’s arrest should serve as a stern warning to potential offenders that disloyalty does not pay and participation in rebel activities will inevitably lead to arrest.

“The arrest reaffirms the unwavering commitment of the joint anti-terrorism task force and the territorial units in identifying and holding accountable those who violate their oaths to protect our nation. We will not tolerate acts of betrayal and continue to urge all security personnel to remain vigilant,” Enanga stressed.

This development follows increased efforts by the UPDF and the Congolese army against ADF rebels in the DRC as part of the ongoing Operation Shuja.

The operation has resulted in the death of several rebel commanders and their fighters, while others have been captured alive or have surrendered. Additionally, some captives have been liberated, ammunition caches have been recovered, and rebel camps have been destroyed.

The rebels have since abandoned their bases.
