Security Guard, Two Others Beaten To Death In Kayunga Mob Attacks

Investigations are underway in Kayunga District regarding an instance of mob violence that resulted in the deaths of two young men suspected of theft. The incident took place on Wednesday in Namabugga village, Kitimbwa sub-county.

Beatrice Ajwang, the head of the criminal investigations department in Kayunga District, reported that the young men were seized and bound by locals after being accused of stealing a wheelbarrow and two iron sheets. “The duo were rounded up and tied with ropes by residents at night after they raided homes and stole household properties,” Ms Ajwang said.

She added that the stolen wheelbarrow was discovered at the scene of the crime. The identities of the deceased were not immediately available, but they were confirmed to be residents of the sub-county.

Mob Attack in Nakaliro Village

In a separate incident, a man believed to be employed by a private security firm was killed by a mob in Nakaliro village, Kayunga Town, after allegedly breaking into a house around 10am on Thursday. The man, who was in his late twenties and remains unidentified, is said to have entered a locked residence, assuming the occupants were away at work.

The event occurred a short distance from the Kayunga police station. “Upon entering the house, he encountered the homeowner’s wife. She sounded an alarm, causing the intruder to flee towards a nearby swamp,” explained the CID chief.

Isa Katongole, the officer in charge at Kayunga police station, reported that locals working in the rice fields gave chase and subsequently apprehended the man.

He further noted that police delayed in their response to the incident due to all patrol vehicles being deployed elsewhere at the time. A source within the security sector disclosed that the deceased had been associated with a private security group. However, this publication has been unable to independently confirm these claims.
