UBOS Gets All 120,000 Tablets For National Census

As the National Population and Housing census in Uganda approaches in three weeks, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has announced the receipt of all 120,000 tablets that will be utilized by enumerators. This follows the initial delivery of 36,000 tablets in March, which had sparked concerns about possible delays.

Dr. Chris Mukiza, the Executive Director of UBOS, addressed the Finance, Planning and Economic Development Committee, Budget Committee, and Committee on National Economy in Parliament. He assured them that the census process would begin as planned on May 10th, 2024.

The prompt delivery of the tablets is vital, considering UBOS’s earlier plan to assign 110,000 enumerators, each armed with a device for electronic data collection. This transition from traditional paper-based methods is intended to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of data collection.

The tablets, which cost an estimated Shs. 132 billion, played a significant role in the decision to delay the census from its initial date in August 2023.

In a recent meeting with the MPs, Dr. Mukiza disclosed that each parish would keep two tablets after the census. These devices will serve as important tools for future local data collection efforts.

UBOS has just wrapped up a recruitment drive, resulting in the hiring of 114,460 enumerators and 18,483 supervisors. The Bureau is also preparing to commence the final training for the enumerators and supervisors, which will conclude on May 7th, just three days before the census.
