Man found hanging dead after village court convicted him of goat theft

In a tragic turn of events, a 24-year-old man, Aaron Opio, was found dead in Loro Sub County, Oyam District, after being convicted by a local court for stealing a goat from a neighbour. Opio, who resided in Omolo ‘A’ Village in Opelere Parish, reportedly stole and slaughtered the goat on a Tuesday.

Following his confession of guilt in the village court, he agreed to compensate the goat’s owner with Shs250,000. However, when he was unable to gather the funds, he was confined in a house owned by the chairman of the Omolo trading centre.

According to a local resident, Mr Tonny Bayuda, Opio managed to escape during the night and tragically ended his life using the same rope that had been used to restrain him. The following Wednesday, farmers from Omolo ‘A’ Village discovered Opio’s body hanging from a tree while on their way to their fields.

The LCI chairman of Omolo ‘A’ Village, Mr Nickson Okwir, described Opio as a man who favoured drinking at the trading centre overworking, labelling him as lazy. Following the discovery of Opio’s body, detectives from the Adakoberiot police post arrived at the scene to record statements from those present before releasing the body to Opio’s family for burial.
