Former Kabale District Mayor Pius Ruhemurana Dies At 76

With a heavy heart, we confirm the passing of Pius Ruhemurana, the former mayor of Kabale Municipality. Dr. Ruhemurana, 76, passed away due to stroke complications at Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality early Wednesday morning. He had been fighting the illness for over two years.

Dr. Ruhemurana was not just a respected medical doctor but also a dedicated gynaecologist who operated a private clinic in the municipality. He was a fervent supporter of the Opposition stalwart and ex-president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Kizza Besigye.

His long tenure marked his political career as the mayor of Kabale Municipality, a position he held for over two decades from 1996 to 2016 under the FDC banner. His 2006 re-election campaign was particularly memorable when he successfully defended his mayoral seat against NRM rival George Mbonigaba.

In 2016, however, he was defeated by Emmanuel Byamugisha Sentaro, the current mayor of Kabale Municipality. Despite this setback, Dr. Ruhemurana continued to be a significant figure within the FDC until his passing.

Known for his candid speech, he was a strong advocate for the improvement of Kabale and its residents, even in the presence of the country’s leaders. He served as the chairperson on the FDC delegates structures, the FDC chairperson for Kabale Municipality, and the Kabale FDC vice chairperson.

Dr. Ruhemurana was a man for all seasons, balancing his scientific pursuits with his spiritual beliefs. He served as the head of laity for Kabale Diocese and the chairperson board of trustees of Kabale gold club, among other roles. His contributions to the community will be greatly missed.
