Six children have died in a Wednesday morning fire in the village of Mulanda B in Kisubi, Wakiso district.
Police said the tragic incident happened at around 1am.
As the residents of the area reel from the shock of the tragedy, the territorial Police at Entebbe are investigating the deadly fire outbreak that happened at the residence of Bakita Ayang, a South Sudanese national.
The distress alert of the fire reached the Police from a community member.
Officers from Kisubi Police Station then rushed to the scene, according to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson.
In a statement, he has asked the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
Owoyesigyire said the joint efforts of community members and emergency responders to save the children — aged between two and 16 — were futile.
The deployed Police officers were accompanied by firefighters from Entebbe Police Division to extinguish the blaze.
Owoyesigyire said the bodies of the young victims were recovered and transported to the city mortuary for autopsy.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have originated from an electric kettle left unattended in the sitting room, connected to a socket,” he said.
“The scene has been cordoned off as authorities conduct further inquiries to determine the exact cause of the fire.”
